BENICIA
Our geography has influenced our history, our development and our
quality of life. Sitting comfortably on the Carquinez Strait, only
35 miles from San Francisco, 25 from the Napa Valley, and 60 from
Sacramento, our location insulates us from most urban challenges
while presenting us, conveniently, the wonders of northern California.
The town was established in 1846, and became the first city incorporated
in the new State of California in 1850. The Downtown area has many
buildings dating from the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, including
over 30 historical points of interest, that now help house a thriving
commercial district.
Our appealing Mediterranean climate of dry, warm summers and moderate
winters, is a direct result of our location. The mean annual temperature
is 69 degrees, and the average rainfall is 18 inches. From the State
Park to numerous neighborhood parks to the 300-berth marina, many
Benicia residents enjoy an active out-of-doors lifestyle.
Various publications have chronicled how special our town is by
noting its combination of waterfront setting, historical charm,
accomplished studio artist community, housing affordability, high
academic test scores, and low crime statistics.
